Cournoyer Breaks School Record in Bulldog Victory at Alabama A&M

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – In a record-breaking performance, Andrea Cournoyer turbo-charged the Samford women's basketball team to a 75-68 victory over Alabama A&M for the squad's first win of the season.

Cournoyer poured in 37 points to break the single-game points record that was previously set when Emily London scored 35 against Davidson in 2010.

"The first one is always the hardest, especially in an environment like that. I told your kids that this will be unlike any environment that we have ever played in, what a cool atmosphere for our kids," Samford coach Carley Kuhns said. "I was so proud of the way we stayed composed down the stretch, we just found a way. On the road, you just have to find a way to win and we did."

With the win, Samford moves to 1-3 on the season, while Alabama A&M drops to 0-3 in the early going of the 2022-23 campaign.

"Credit to my teammates. We just moved the ball well and things just started rolling," Cournoyer said. "First quarter I had no idea then second quarter I started heating up a little bit and then I was like "Well, I might as well keep shooting until I miss". I think our team did a good job of hitting the open people and it just happened to be me."

Cournoyer went 13-for-18 from the field which included sinking a quartet of threes. The senior guard scored three in the first quarter followed by nine in the second, 15 in the third and 10 more in the final frame.

To go along with her 37 points, Cournoyer grabbed five rebounds, seven assists and a trio of steals.

Redshirt freshman Carly Heidger had the best game of her young Bulldog by scoring 10 points on Thursday before fouling out.

Sussy Ngulefac and Rylie Stephens each added nine points in the victory. Ngulefac also cleaned up the board with a game-high eight rebounds.

In total, the Samford bench outscored the Alabama A&M bench by a score of 22-5.

After trailing by as many as eight in the first quarter, Samford stormed back and took its lead of the night when Cournoyer splashed a jumper with 1:39 left in the first half for a 30-29 advantage.

With the game tied at 40 nearly halfway through the third period, Cournoyer and the Bulldogs from Birmingham went on a 12-2 run that put Samford out front for good.

Alabama A&M threatened in the final frame by cutting the Samford lead to three with just over eight minutes to play before Cournoyer scored 10 of Samford's final 17 points to secure the 75-68 victory.

"Ace just put us her back and willed us to a win," Kuhns said. "That's what she does, that's why she's an all-conference player".

The Bulldogs return to the Pete Hanna Center on Sunday, Nov. 20 for a contest with Miles. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. CT.
