Women’s Hoops Wins Over Miles, 77-52

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford women's basketball team earned a 77-52 win over the Miles College Golden Bears Sunday evening in the Pete Hanna Center.

With the win, Samford improves to 2-3 on the season. Miles falls to 2-2 with the loss.

"We've had a challenging opening to our season with some tough road games and tough challenges, so it was nice to be back home," Samford head coach Carley Kuhns said. "It was also a good opportunity for everyone to get some minutes and it was just cool to see some people step up and make some shots and score their first college points for Samford as transfers or as freshmen. That's always fun to do."

Samford was led by Andrea Cournoyer with 18 points, four rebounds and six assists. North Alabama transfer Macey Lee scored eight points, her first in a Samford uniform, while Sussy Ngulefac tallied seven points and five rebounds. Rylie Stephens led the Bulldogs in rebounding with seven boards on the night. Nicole Azar added six points, also her first points as a Bulldog.

For Miles, Feliah Greer led the way with 15 points and seven rebounds. Tederia Ashley had 11 points for Miles.

Samford opened the first quarter by taking a commanding 17-2 lead with 3:14 to go in the period following a jumper by Stephens. Miles fought back to cut the lead to seven points at 19-12 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Samford pushed its lead back out to 12 points at 24-12 with 8:45 to go in the period after a layup by Sanaa Redmond. Miles cut the lead to nine points at 29-20 with 5:14 left in the quarter after a jumper by Kelli Finkley. Samford took a 34-25 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Samford extended its lead out to 15 points at 40-25 with 8:09 to go in the third quarter on a layup by Cournoyer. The Bulldogs ran their lead up to 24 points late in the third quarter at 56-32 with 1:03 left in the period after a jumper by Kiersten Nelson. Samford led, 56-34, at the end of the third period.

In the fourth quarter, Samford pushed its lead to 31 points at 65-34 with 7:19 to go following a free throw by Nicole Azar. Miles could get no closer than 23 points the rest of the way as Samford came away with the 77-52 win.

Samford will play host to Talladega College on Tuesday, Nov. 22. The game is set for a 6 p.m. start from the Pete Hanna Center.
