Samford Grinds Out Win At Chattanooga In SoCon Road Opener

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – After trailing at the half, the Samford women's team pulled off a 58-53 victory at the Chattanooga Mocs on Thursday night for the Bulldogs' first Southern Conference road win of the season.

With the win, Samford evens the season record at 9-9 and moves to an impressive 3-0 in SoCon play for the second time under coach Carly Kuhns and just the fourth time since joining the league in 2008. Chattanooga falls to 9-8 and 1-1 in conference play.

The 58-53 result moves the Bulldog winning streak to five games and marks the first time this season that Samford won a game that it trailed at the half.

Led by reigning SoCon Player of the Week Andrea Bailey's 13 points, a quartet of Bulldogs scored in double figures on Thursday. Bailey also had five assists and four steals which was one more than Chattanooga's three steals as a team.

Kathleen Wheeler hit a career-high trio of three-pointers en route to a season-best 11 points, while Masyn Marchbanks poured in 11 of her own coming off the bench.

Despite being in foul trouble for most of the night, Sussy Ngulefac added 10 points of her own in a winning effort.

On the boards, Emily pulled down a team-leading seven rebounds to go along with her seven points.

After playing to an 11-all tie after the opening 10 minutes, the Mocs opened the second quarter on a 10-2 run and led by as many as eight before back-to-back Wheeler three-pointers brought the Bulldogs right back into the game. At the half, Chattanooga held a 27-24 advantage.

Powered by a 14-5 run coming out of the locker room, Samford outscored Chattanooga 19-10 to give the Bulldogs a five-point lead at 43-37 heading into the fourth and devise quarter.

Ngulefac put Samford up eight with a layup to open the scoring in the fourth before the Mocs mounted a comeback to tie the game at 50-all with 3:07 remaining in regulation.

After Chattanooga hit a three to go up 53-52 with 2:29 left, Ngulefac got a layup to fall to put the Bulldogs up for good at 54-53 before Marchbanks delivered the dagger in the form of a floating jumper with 20 ticks remaining.

Bailey sealed the 58-53 victory by making a pair of free throws with less than a second left in the contest.

Samford looks to stay undefeated in SoCon play on Saturday as the Bulldogs head to ETSU to take on the Buccaneers. The game is slated for noon CT.
