Bailey, Marchbanks Lift Samford Past Furman At Home

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Behind the dynamic backcourt duo of Andrea Bailey and Masyn Marchbanks, the Samford women's basketball team blew past Furman by a score of 81-62 in front of the Bulldog faithful on Thursday evening.

The win catapults Samford to 11-10 on the year and 5-1 in Southern Conference play to enter the weekend atop the SoCon standings. Furman drops to 9-12 and 1-5 in the league.

Thursday's win is the eighth straight at the Pete Hanna Center for the Bulldogs and moves Samford to 18-3 all-time under coach Carley Kuhns in SoCon games held at home.

In one of her best showings of the season, Bailey compiled the first Bulldog double-double of the year with 17 points and 11 assists. The guard also grabbed a team-leading seven rebounds and seven steals.

Not to be outdone, Marchbanks matched her 22 points against Mercer with 22 more points against Furman. Since being inserted into the starting lineup, the freshman is averaging 19 points per game over the last three games.

Fellow freshman Alyssa Tarpley hit a trio of threes for nine points while Emily Bowman had six blocks to go along with her eight points on the night.

After Furman jumped out to a 7-0 to open the game, it was all Bulldogs, all the time. Samford took the lead for good on a Kathleen Wheeler fast break with 4:25 remaining in the opening stanza and never looked back.

Samford ended the first quarter on a 9-0 run that was capped off with a Marchbanks buzzer-beater.

Heading into the locker room, the Bulldogs led by 19 on the heels of a 7-0 run to end the half that was powered by Mattie Hatcher and Tarpley.

The lead expanded to 19 at the end of the third before Furman made one final push in the fourth quarter and reduced the deficit to six.

Samford answered with a 16-5 run to seal the 81-62 victory. Marchbanks scored the final six points of the night.

The Bulldogs will celebrate the program's 25th and Title IX's 50th anniversaries on Saturday against Wofford. The tip is scheduled for 2 p.m. CT and admission is free.
