Samford Holds Annual Basketball Media Day/Media 3-Point Shootout

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford men's and women's basketball programs held their annual Basketball Media Day/3-Point Shootout for members of the local media Tuesday at the Pete Hanna Center.
Head Coach Carley Kuhns and players Andrea Bailey and Sussy Ngulefac represented the women's basketball team. The men's team representatives were Head Coach Bucky McMillan and players Logan Dye and Jermaine Marshall. The event began with the players and coaches talking with the local media about the season so far and the upcoming Southern Conference season.
Kuhns said she likes the direction her team is headed in as it enters into SoCon play.
"I think we're trending in the right direction," Kuhns said. "We have a ton of new faces this year, really only three veteran, I would say, minutes players, returning from last season (Bailey, Ngulefac and Sanaa Redmond). Obviously three talented players and I think we did a good job of putting some pieces around those three to kind of help this program. And those kids are now just kind of coming into their own, figuring out their roles, figuring out how they can help this team and what the expectation of them is. I think as the season's games have gone on we really have settled in to figuring out what we need from each individual player and I think we're in a really good place right now."
The men's team has had a few key players out in nonconference play and the early part of conference action. McMillan said he thinks the experience the younger players have gotten due to those experienced players being out will help as the season progresses.
"I really feel that our non-conference prepared some of the players for the roles that they would end up having in conference," McMillan said. "When you play a lot of guys, they've had experience. Even though someone may get 28 minutes one night that may be used to getting 12, it's different than if they're getting no minutes. So, when we have guys like Quinn Richey, who hasn't started a game for us since he's been here, but he starts in the first conference game and plays 28 minutes, it wasn't completely foreign for him to be on that floor. We're playing and we're subbing in and at some point, we're subbing in with scholarship players and non-scholarship players, but they've been in games, and I think if we didn't do that in nonconference we would have really struggled."
Following the interviews, members of the media competed in a game of knock out, followed by a 3-point shootout. Kari Osep from NBC 13 won the game of knock out, and Blake Gardner of Samford Broadcasting picked up the win in the 3-point contest.
Both teams are in action this week. The men's team hosts VMI Wednesday evening at 6:30 p.m., and plays at UNC Greensboro Saturday at 3 p.m. The women's team hosts Western Carolina Thursday night at 6 p.m., and then hosts UNC Greensboro Saturday at 2 p.m. Tickets for home games can be purchased at www.SamfordTickets.com.
