Women’s Basketball Sprints Past UNCG To Close Homestand

Birmingham, Ala. – Led by the trio of Andrea Bailey, Carly Heidger and Sanaa Redmond, the Samford women's basketball team upended the UNCG Spartans, 76-66, to stay perfect after the opening weekend of Southern Conference play.

With the victory, Samford moves to 8-9 on the season and 2-0 in SoCon play. The win also pushes the Bulldog win streak to four games for the first time this season. UNCG falls to 8-8 and 1-1 on the year.

Saturday's victory over UNCG was Samford coach Carley Kuhns' 30th SoCon win of her Bulldog career and improved Samford's home SoCon record to 17-3 under Kuhns.

The trio of Bailey, Heidger and Redmond combined for 49 of Samford's 76 points as Bailey had a team-high 18 points while Heidger and Redmond both scored season-highs with 16 and 15 points respectively.

Sussy Ngulefac and Emily Bowman each had eight points in Saturday's winning effort.

Bailey also led the Bulldogs in rebounds with eight, assists with eight and steals with three.

Fueled by an 11-2 run in the heart of the first quarter and nine points from Bailey, the Bulldogs outscored the Spartans 19-8 in the opening frame.

The 11-point advantage held steady at halftime as both squads played to an 18-all second quarter stalemate to give Samford a 37-26 lead heading into halftime.

On the back of a 9-0 run in the third quarter, The Bulldog peaked at 15 when Masyn Marchbanks got a layup to fall with 4:58 remaining in the period.

UNGC battled back and made a game of it in the fourth when the Spartans shrunk the Samford lead to only four with 4:56 remaining 4:56 left in regulation.

To answer the Spartan run, Heidger called game by scoring eight of the final 16 Samford points. The redshirt freshman hit her one and only three of the contest to put the Bulldogs back up nine before sealing a 76-66 victory by making a pair of free throws with seven ticks of the clock left in the game.

For the first time in SoCon play, Samford hits the road for a midweek contest at Chattanooga on Jan. 12. Tip is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT.
