Women’s Basketball Battles Arkansas Before Falling, 68-54

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- The Samford women's basketball team battled the Arkansas Razorbacks before falling by a score of 68-54 Saturday afternoon at Simmons Bank Arena.
 
With the loss, Samford fell to 7-4. Arkansas improved to 9-3 with the victory.
 
Samford was led in the game by Sadie Stetson with 22 points, making 8-of-11 shots from the floor, including 6-of-8 from three-point range. Emily Bowman, Lexie Pritchard and Masyn Marchbanks added 10 points each for the Bulldogs.
 
Samara Spencer led Arkansas with 20 points. Makayla Daniels scored 14 points, while Maryam Dauda added 11 points and nine rebounds for the Razorbacks. Saylor Poffenbarger grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds,
 
After falling behind, 5-0 early, Samford answered by scoring the next five points to tie the score at 5-5 with 5:52 left in the first quarter following a three-pointer by Stetson. Arkansas scored the ensuing five points to take a 10-5 lead, but Samford came back to cut the lead to 13-11 at the end of the first quarter.
 
Samford opened the second quarter by taking a 19-16 lead with 5:47 left in the period after a pair of free throws by Marchbanks. Arkansas then closed the quarter on a 13-2 run to take a 29-21 lead into the locker room at halftime.
 
The Bulldogs cut the Arkansas lead to four points at 29-25 with 7:57 left in the third quarter after a layup by Bowman. Arkansas then went on a 10-2 run to push its lead to 39-27 with 4:33 left in the third period following a driving layup by Daniels. Samford cut the lead back to six points at 39-33, but Arkansas answered with a 7-0 run to take a 46-33 lead at the 1:22 mark in the third quarter. Arkansas held a 49-35 lead at the end of the third quarter.
 
In the fourth quarter, Samford closed to within 10 points at 57-47 with 5:08 to go after a three-pointer by Marchbanks. With Arkansas leading, 61-51, the Razorbacks scored seven-straight points for a 68-51 lead and then came away with the 68-54 win.
 
Samford will return home to play host to North Alabama on Tuesday, Dec. 19. The game is set for a 1 p.m. start from the Pete Hanna Center.
