Track and Field Excels in Final Championship Tune-up

BIRMINGHAM, AL - The Samford track and field teams wrapped up their final weekend of competition before championship season, putting on a dominant showing at the Samford Invite held at the Birmingham CrossPlex on Saturday. The Bulldogs also hosted the Samford Open at the CrossPlex on Sunday, and sent a small contingent of athletes to Nashville to take part in the Music City Challenge.

The Bulldogs racked up medals at the Invite, with a total of 16 top-three finishes. Jed Sisco was one of many standouts, winning the men's pole vault and setting a personal best at 5.30m. Other first-place finishes included Ty Kimberlin (Men's Long Jump, 7.16m), Edie Smith (Women's 5000 Meter, 18:12.42), Jackson Merrell (Men's 5000 Meter, 15:29.51), and Titus Moore (Men's 60 Meter Hurdles, 7.94).

Samford also sent McKenzie Hogue, Katie Strozier, Sinkenesh Parker, Andrew McGinnis and Jose Penalver to Vanderbilt to face stiff competition at the Music City Challenge on Friday and Saturday. Hogue, Parker, McGinnis all competed on Friday in the 5000 meter, while Penalver and Strozier competed in the 800 meter on Saturday.

Hogue set a new program record in the Women's 5000 Meter with a time of 16:32.60.

On Saturday, a small handful of Bulldogs competed in the Samford Open, also held at the Birmingham CrossPlex, with Caleb Scheffler finishing second in the Men's 800 Meter (1:55.99).

"I don't know how much better of a meet we could have had this weekend," said head coach Rod Tiffin. "We seem to be coming together at the right time. Now we just need to stay the course and be ready to compete at conference in two weeks. It should be exciting!"

Samford will now turn its attention towards championship season. The Bulldogs will enjoy a weekend off from competition, before heading to Lexington, Va. to take part in the SoCon Indoor Championships on February 25-26.
