Bulldogs Drop Saturday Contest To Chattanooga

Birmingham, Ala. – The Samford women's basketball team fell 60-55 on Saturday evening to the visiting Mocs of Chattanooga.

The Bulldogs recede to 13-13 on the year and 7-4 in Southern Conference action. Chattanooga improves to 15-10 overall with a 7-3 record within the SoCon.

On a night that only saw a quartet of Bulldogs score, Sussy Ngulefac scored a team-high 20 points for her 20-point game in the last four outings.

Masyn Marchbanks continued her torrid pace by scoring 17 points and dishing out five assists.

The duo of Kathleen Wheeler and Rylie Stephens each had nine points on the evening, while Wheeler pulled down a game-high eight rebounds.

After coming out of the gates slow, Samford turned on the jets and sprinted past Chattanooga with a 17-2 run to end the first quarter with a 19-9 lead. The exclamation point in the opening 10 minutes came when Stephens hit a fadeaway jumper to beat the buzzer.

Chattanooga returned the favor in the second frame by coming back from 10 down to take a brief lead before Marchbanks scored the final four points of the half to put Samford up 28-27 at the break.

The third quarter featured a back-and-forth struggle where neither team led by any more than three points. Marchbanks end the 10 minutes by taking a missed Moc free throw coast to coast for a layup as time expired for a 44-42 Bulldog lead.

Chattanooga opened the fourth and final quarter with back-to-back threes and never looked back riding a 15-3 run to the 60-55 final.

Samford will have the midweek off before hosting Mercer on Feb. 18 in a game that will double as the Red Out game and Senior Day for Andrea Bailey and Wheeler. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m. CT on Saturday.
