SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Samford women's basketball team dropped a 59-41 decision at Wofford Saturday afternoon at Richardson Indoor Stadium.
With the loss, Samford fell to 11-10 overall and 3-3 in Southern Conference play. Wofford improved to 12-7 overall and 4-1 in league play.
Samford was led in the loss by
Kennedy Langham with nine points and seven rebounds.
Sadie Stetson and
Carly Heidger scored eight points each for the Bulldogs.
For Wofford, Rachael Rose had 21 points, 11 rebounds and six assists. Annabelle Schultz and Maddie Heiss added nine points each for the Terriers.
Samford took an early 6-5 lead with 3:37 to go in the first quarter after a pull up jumper by Heidger. After Wofford took an 8-6 lead, back-to-back baskets by Samford gave the Bulldogs a 10-8 lead late in the first period. The teams were tied at 10-10 at the end of the quarter.
Wofford scored the first five points of the second quarter to take a 15-10 lead with 7:36 left in the period after a pair of free throws by Rose. Samford answered with a 7-0 run to take a 17-15 lead at the 4:31 mark in the second quarter after a layup by Heidger. With the game tied at 19-19, Wofford scored the next five points to take a 24-19 lead, but a layup by Heidger cut the lead to 24-21 with 47 seconds left before halftime. A late three-pointer by Wofford's Rose gave the Terriers a 27-21 lead heading into the locker room at halftime.
Samford scored the first five points of the third quarter to cut the lead to one point at 27-26 with 8:00 left in the period after a free throw by Langham. Wofford scored the next five points to push its lead to 32-26 with 6:42 remaining in the third following a three-pointer by Heiss. With Wofford leading, 38-32, the Terriers scored the final five points of the third quarter to take a 43-32 lead at the end of the period.
After Samford cut the lead to 10 points at 45-35 early in the fourth quarter, Wofford scored the next six points to push its lead out to 16 points at 51-35 with 7:04 to play. After Samford cut the lead to 12 points at 51-39, Wofford went on an 8-0 run to push its lead to 20 points at 59-39 with 1:39 left after a pair of free throws by Rose. Wofford finished with the 59-41 win.
Samford will return home to play host to Mercer on Saturday, Feb. 3. The game is set for a 2 p.m. start from the Pete Hanna Center.
