CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Samford women's golf team earned a 4-1 win over the host school, The Citadel, on the first day of Oyster Shuck Match Play on Monday morning. The second round, which was supposed to be played Monday afternoon, was canceled due to inclement weather.
"We played really well in horrible conditions," Samford head coach
Joe Davidson said. "Anything can happen in match play, and we didn't let the weather affect our performance or the outcome. This is a great event on a unique course and it's sad that the afternoon matches are rained out. But we'll be back at it tomorrow against Wofford."
In Monday's first round, Samford's
Anika Richards defeated Paige Gilstrap, 5 & 3.
Gabi Nicastro earned a 6 & 5 win over Sofia Vargas.
Ella Stoll defeated Maggie Parmer, 3 & 2, while
Kelley Topiwala defeated Naomi Huang, 7 & 5. The Citadel's lone win came when Megan Ikeda defeated
Bailey Dunstan, 2 & 1.
Samford will take on Wofford in Tuesday's final round, with tee times at 7 a.m. (CT). A full recap and results will be posted to
