Bulldogs Drop Hard-Fought Game At UNC Greensboro

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Samford women's basketball team dropped a hard-fought game at UNC Greensboro, falling by a score of 52-44 Thursday evening at Fleming Gymnasium.
 
With the loss, Samford fell to 11-14 overall and 3-7 in Southern Conference play. UNC Greensboro improved to 16-9 overall and 5-5 in league games.
 
Samford was led in the loss by Masyn Marchbanks with 15 points. Carly Heidger had 10 points and six rebounds for the Bulldogs. Emily Bowman grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
 
For UNCG, Isys Grady and Ayanna Khalfani tallied 13 points apiece.
 
Samford jumped out to an early 6-2 lead with 7:11 to go in the first quarter after a driving layup by Kennedy Langham. With Samford leading, 10-6, UNC Greensboro closed the first quarter with an 8-2 run to take a 14-12 lead at the end of the first period.
 
UNC Greensboro pushed its lead to six points at 21-15 with 4:27 left in the second period after a jumper by Grady. With the Spartans leading, 25-20, Samford's Marchbanks cut the lead to two points with a three-point play with 20 seconds remaining, making the score 25-23 heading into the locker room at halftime.
 
In the third quarter, UNC Greensboro stretched its lead to seven points at 32-25 with 6:34 to go in the period after a jumper by Nia Howard. The Spartans led by 14 points at 43-29 with 2:37 to go in the third quarter following a jumper by Jayde Gamble. The Spartans held a 43-33 lead at the end of the third quarter.
 
Samford scored the first nine points of the fourth quarter to cut the lead to just one point at 43-42 with 3:54 to go after a layup by Sadie Stetson. The Spartans scored the next five points to push the lead back to six points at 48-42 with 2:24 left following a jumper by Khalfani. Samford cut the lead to four points at 48-44, but the Bulldogs could get no closer as they eventually fell by a score of 52-44.
 
Samford will play at Western Carolina on Saturday. The game is set for a 6 p.m. (CT) start from Cullowhee, N.C.
