MONTEVALLO, Ala. – To open the highly anticipated 2024 outdoor spring season, the Samford men's and women's teams enjoyed a strong showing at the Montevallo Falcon Classic hosted by the University of Montevallo on Friday and Saturday.
In total, 26 Samford student-athletes placed in the top three of their respective events including 11 Bulldogs taking home first place finishes on the weekend.
On the women's side, Amiel Dabney set a Montevallo Falcon Classic record by winning the women's 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.10. In the women's 10,000-meter junior Edie Smith took home the title with a time of 37:30.5. Bella Edwards followed up her strong indoor season by finishing first with a 17:49.03 in the women's 5,000 meters.
In the women's high jump, Grace Gamboa took first and second place with a leap of 1.68 meters. In the women's pole vault, teammates Brittany Bishop and Libby Jackson finished first and second with jumps of 3.68 meters on Saturday.
On the men's side, there was a clean Samford sweep in the shot put with Eli Penix (15.16m) finishing first, Carl Henry (15.15m) in second and Marshall Gainer (14.40m) in third. The Bulldog trio of Ian Jones (triple jump, 14.68m), Arthur Chitty (high jump, 2.01m) and Jackson Olivo (400-meter hurdles, 53.22) each won their respective events. Rounding it out on the men's side, Brenden Vanderpool took home first in the pole vault with a jump of 5.35 meters.
Samford will next compete in the Mississippi State-hosted Al Schimdt Invitational on March 22-23.
