BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford women's basketball team fell to Western Carolina, 76-69, in the regular-season finale for both teams Saturday afternoon in the Pete Hanna Center.
The game was Senior Day for Samford's five seniors,
Annie Ramil,
Kamryn Knight,
Jada Knight,
Sadie Stetson and
Kylee Lewandowski.
"Obviously, this is a great group of women," Samford head coach
Carley Kuhns said of her senior class. "Every single one of them were transfers to us and I hope they found a home here and I hope they felt welcome. I can't thank them enough for taking a chance on us."
With the loss, Samford fell to 12-18 overall and 7-7 in Southern Conference play. Western Carolina improved to 13-16 overall and 3-11 in SoCon play.
Samford was led in the loss by
Claire Johnson with 21 points.
Sierra Godbolt had 13 points, while
Annie Ramil grabbed eight rebounds.
For Western Carolina, Tyja Beans led the way with 20 points and nine rebounds. Zanoria Cruz added 18 points for the Catamounts.
Samford led, 21-17 at the end of the first quarter and 42-32 at halftime. Western Carolina won the third quarter, 20-13 to cut the lead to 55-52 heading into the final period. The Catamounts outscored the Bulldogs 24-14 in the fourth quarter to pull away for the 76-69 win.
Samford will be the No. 5 seed for next week's Southern Conference Tournament. The Bulldogs will open play in the SoCon Tournament by taking on the No. 4 seed Wofford on Thursday at 4:45 p.m. CT at Harrah's Cherokee Center in Asheville, N.C.
