SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Samford track and field program had three of its athletes receive Southern Conference honors when the conference office made the announcement this afternoon. Zephaniah Carico-McLennan and Grace Lueders were named Track Athletes of the Week while Carter Ellis earned Field Athlete of the Week.
The Samford trio received honors after their performances at the Joe Walker Invite, hosted by Ole Miss, this past weekend. Carico McLennan won the men's 800-meter by running a time of 1:47.56. At the time of the meet, the time from the sophomore was the second-fastest time in the nation but remains the 13th-best time so far this year. The Texas native was just off his career-best time in the event by fifteen-hundredths of a second.
Grace Lueders earned her SoCon weekly honors after a second-place finish in the women's 800-meter race. In just her second time running the event, the junior set the 6th-fastest time in Bulldog history with a time of 2:08.18. The Arkansas native currently has the fastest time in the conference in the women's 800.
The Bulldogs earned their first outdoor SoCon weekly awards as Carter Ellis took fourth at Ole Miss' Joe Walker Invite in the men's pole vault. He set the seventh-best time in outdoor Bulldog history by clearing 5.18 meters. Ellis earned his second SoCon Athlete of the Week award as he won the honor in the indoor season earlier this year.
The Bulldogs are back in action on this weekend as they take a quick trip over to Tuscaloosa, Ala. at the Crimson Tide Invitational which will take place on Friday and Saturday.
