Samford Selected To Play In One of The First Four Games of The 2026 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- The NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Committee selected Samford women's basketball as one of the 16 seeds to play in one of the First Four games of the 2026 NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship.

The team and university held a selection show watch party in the university center/Harry's Coffeehouse Sunday evening with community members, students and faculty/staff in attendance.

"It's a thrill to see your name called. It's a thrill to be joined by so many people in our community like this, to come out and support us and for our team and the amount of workouts and extra work that we did all year long, for them to see that name (Samford) get called up on that show( NCAAW Basketball Selection Show), there's no feeling like that." said head coach Matt Wise.

Samford will play the Southern University Jaguars on Thursday, March 19th. Southern University was also named a 16 seed after winning the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) tournament. The winner of Thursday's game will face the South Carolina Gamecocks on March 23rd.

Southern went 19-13 overall and were 12-6 in SWAC conference play. They won their conference tournament last year and this will be a back-to-back NCAA tournament appearance for the Jaguars.

Bulldogs will look to continue their winning momentum going into the NCAA tournament coming off winning the SoCon Tournament and defeating the top three teams in the conference.

This is the Bulldogs third appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Their most recent appearance was in 2012, but the Bulldogs did earn a bid in 2020 before the tournament was canceled due to COVID-19.

The game on Thursday will be played as a neutral site match in Columbia, S.C. at South Carolina University and will be aired on ESPN2.
