Samford’s Young Named SoCon Defensive Player Of The Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samford junior safety LaShon Young was named the Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Week when the league released its weekly football awards Monday afternoon.

Young had a strong overall game for the Bulldogs in Saturday's 45-7 win over VMI. On defense, on the opening drive of the game, he picked off a pass and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown. He also had a tackle for loss in the game.

On special teams, Young returned three punts for a total of 85 yards. He had a long return of 55 yards to set up a touchdown in the second quarter.

Next up, Samford will play at UAB on Saturday, Oct. 3. The game is set for a 2:30 p.m. start from Protective Stadium in downtown Birmingham.
