Baseball To Host The Citadel In Weekend Series

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
The Samford baseball team will play host to The Citadel in a three-game Southern Conference series this weekend at Joe Lee Griffin Field. The teams are scheduled to play Friday at 6 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 12 p.m.
 
Samford enters the weekend with a record of 24-19 overall and 10-5 in Southern Conference play. Samford earned a 4-2 win over cross-town rival UAB Wednesday evening.
 
For Samford offensively, freshman Austin Edens is batting .351 with 11 doubles, 12 home runs and 40 RBI. Hunter Swilling leads the team in home runs with 13, and in RBI with 49, to go along with his .316 batting average. Heath Quinn is hitting .339 with nine homers and 37 RBI. Alex Lee is hitting .333 this season, while Richard Greene has a .327 average.
 
The Citadel is currently 18-25 overall and 3-12 in the Southern Conference. The Citadel dropped a 7-2 decision at Charleston Southern Tuesday night.
 
For The Citadel offensively, Connor Walsh is hitting .342 with 13 doubles, four home runs and 42 RBI. Stephen Windham is batting .311 with nine doubles and 27 RBI. Drew Ellis leads The Citadel in home runs with six so far this season.
 
In Friday night's game, right-handed pitcher Alex Ledford (6-3, 3.54 ERA) will start the game on the mound for Samford, while The Citadel will start left-hander James Reeves (5-3, 3.76 ERA). Saturday's game will feature Samford right-hander Parker Curry (6-4, 5.15 ERA) against The Citadel left-hander J.P. Sears (4-4, 3.90 ERA). Neither team has named a starter for Sunday's series finale.
 
Samford has an all-time record of 11-7 in 18 previous meetings with The Citadel. All 18 meetings have come since Samford joined the Southern Conference prior to the 2009 season. Last season, Samford won two-of-three games against The Citadel at Riley Park in Charleston, S.C. Samford won the first game, 5-3 and the third game, 8-3. The Citadel took the middle game of the series by a score of 4-2.
