Samford's Quinn Selected By Giants In 2016 MLB Draft

The Bulldogs’ junior All-American was taken with the 18th pick of the third round Friday

SECAUCUS, N.J. -- Heath Quinn's magical 2016 campaign continued in illustrious fashion Friday as Samford's junior right fielder was selected by the San Francisco Giants with the 18th pick in the third round (95th overall) of the Major League Baseball Draft.

With the honor, Quinn became the second highest draft pick in Samford's 112-year history. In 2013, former Bulldog-great Philip Ervin was selected 27th overall in the first round by the Cincinnati Reds

Samford, the winningest Division I program in the state of Alabama since 2011, has now had 17 players taken in the MLB Draft over the last six years. Prior to this season, four Bulldogs were drafted in 2011, seven Samford players were taken in 2012, a pair was drafted in 2013 and two were taken in 2014.

Also on Friday, Samford signee Austin Franklin, a hard-throwing right-handed pitcher from Paxton High School in Florida, was drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays with the 90th overall pick in the third round.

Before the Bulldogs' current historical run under the tutelage of Head Coach Casey Dunn, Samford had never had more than one player drafted in a single year in program history.

Quinn, who garnered First-Team All-Southern Conference honors this year, finished 2016 with a .343 batting average, 21 home runs and a school-record 77 RBI. The Bulldogs' all-time, single season leader in RBI also proved to a member of the All-SoCon Tournament Team.

In his illustrious three-year career at Samford, Quinn compiled 44 home runs, 48 doubles, 168 runs, 181 RBI and a stellar .334 batting average.

On Tuesday, Quinn received All-America honors from a major national publication for the second time in six days as the Bulldogs' slugger from Birmingham, Alabama, was named to Baseball America's Second Team, it was officially announced by the organization's headquarters.

Last week, Quinn was named a Third-Team All-American by Collegiate Baseball. One day prior, Quinn was named a semifinalist for the 2016 Golden Spikes Award, which is awarded to the top amateur baseball player in the country.
