OVERALL STATEMENT
“I want to thank everyone for taking time to come out today. Last night, I called all our prospective signees and told them it feels like Christmas Eve. I can’t wait until Santa Claus gets here tomorrow morning around 6 a.m. All of the letters came in and it was quite exciting for us.
“Our criteria when we go out recruiting are that we look for good people, good students and good athletes. I think this class certainly fits those criteria. Over the last five or six weeks I stood up at the podium on Saturdays and talked about Samford and all it has to offer. Our philosophy is that all young men have three choices in their life that affect them more than any other can. The first is their spiritual choice, their second is their college choice and where they want to start a career and the final one is who they choose to marry and raise a family with. I don’t know of a better place for a young man to fulfill all three of those than right here at Samford.
“What makes Samford such a great place to do that? We only talk about two ratios when we talk about Samford. We talk about our teacher-to-student ratio, which is about 12:1, and you just don’t get that anywhere else. That fits into the second criteria of getting your education and that’s special. The second ratio we talk about fits the third decision that they have to make, and that is that the female-to-male ratio here is 3:1. They’re on their own on that.
“As I introduce our coaches and staff, they’re the ones that made this all happen. I say it every week, everywhere I go, but there’s not a better group of guys to come to work with every day. Everybody enjoys each other and they all pull for each other. It’s special and I’m just proud to be with them.”
ON RECRUITING
"Obviously it's a lot of hard work. What you do in recruiting is basically going to tell you how your football team is going to turn out for the next several years. We are very excited about our class we were able to sign this year. Not only are they good football players and good athletes, but they're good students, and we are excited to have them."
ON THE BALANCE OF THE CLASS
"We have about the same number of offensive players as we do defensive players. We were able to fill needs where we graduated people from last year. We graduated some linebacker and were able to get a couple of those. We graduated some offensive linemen, and that was a need for us, and we were able to get four of those. But just the quality of athletes that we were able to get across the board is what we are excited about."
