Samford Falls To Gardner-Webb, 36-17

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.--Justin Richardson scored two touchdowns and gained 163 yards rushing in 22 carries to lead Gardner-Webb University to a 36-17 win over Samford University in NCAA Division I-AA football Saturday.

Gardner-Webb (4-4) jumped to a 16-0 halftime lead as Jeremy Martin threw touchdown passes of 22 yards to Darin Bradford and four yards to Andy Andrews. Andrew Harmon added a 19-yard field goal as the half ended.

Samford (3-5) recovered a Gardner-Webb fumble on the first play of the second half, leading to Chip Walters' 36-yard field goal with 11:46 left in the third quarter. Gardner-Webb led, 16-3.

Gardner-Webb took control, 22-3, when punter Robbie Keels passed to receiver Daryl Henderson for a 33-yard touchdown in a fourth-down-and-12 situation midway through the third period. Richardson's 14-yard touchdown with 6:22 left gave Gardner-Webb a 29-3 lead with Harmon's extra point.

Garrick McCarty scored on a five-yard run with 4:53 to play, and Walters' extra point made the score 29-10, Gardner-Webb.

Richardson added an 11-yard run with 4:39 to play on the first play after Gardner-Webb ran a Samford onsides kick attempt back 33 yards to the Bulldog 11. G-W led, 36-10.

Thomas Brown passed to Jon Pointer on a 23-yard scoring play for Samford, and Walters's extra point accounted for the final score.

G-W rolled up 25 first downs and 462 yards of offense as Martin hit 17 of 35 passes for 213 yards. Samford also made 25 first downs and totaled 361 yards, but the Bulldogs stopped themselves with four turnovers in the first half.
