Samford University's David Misner defeated Samford graduate Brad Vermuelen 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the men's flight A final at the Bulldog Open on Saturday.
Misner will meet Shorter College's Jones Jarvholm who defeated Samford's Raphael Bohli 6-4, 6-2 in the other semifinal. Bohli had defeated Jacksonville State's Will Wright (6-4, 6-1) and Berry College's Alberto Lara (6-1, 7-5) earlier in the day. Misner and Jarvholm will play at 9 a.m. Sunday morning at the Lakeshore Courts.
Misner had to win two matches on Saturday to advance. He defeated Belmont's Will Sandovel 6-2 and 6-3 before meeting Vermuelen in the semifinal. On Friday, Misner defeated UAH's Lucus Linares 6-1, 6-2 in his opening match.
In the women's draw Shorter's Sophie Creamer defeated North Alabama's Neva Torres in the final of the women's A-Flight. Torres had to get past two Samford players on her way to the final. She defeated Courtney Collins 6-0, 6-4 and then Stanka Ilkova in the semifinal 6-4, 6-0. Collins won her first match on Friday over Laura Swain who played independently and Ilkova defeated Vanessa Gomez of Jacksonville State 6-3, 6-2 in her opener.
The men's doubles final will be played after the singles final on Sunday. The final will feature a pair of Samford graduates, Suk Saluja and Vermuelen advanced by defeating Wright and Marcus of Jacksonville State, 9-8, and Black and Thoesen of Birmingham Southern. They will face Shorter's Ramirez and Jarvholm on Sunday.
The women's doubles finished up Saturday night with an all Jacksonville State final. Gorman and Gomez defeated Pearson and DeSmet in the finals to take home the championship. Gomez and Gorman defeated Samford's Collins and Catherine Jaroe in the semi-final 8-3. Collins and Jaroe advanced into the semi's with a 8-4 win over Camacno and Gracey.
