The Samford Bulldogs shot 52 percent in the second half Monday night against Nicholls State to over come a 28-26 halftime deficit and register its first win of the season 64-52 over at Seibert Hall.
The Bulldogs (1-1) placed four players in double-figures as Aimee Cochran led the way with 17 points. Clarissa Clark scored a career-high 14 points, Wendi Wilcox added 13 points, and Giovanni Price chipped in 12 points. Cortney Moore grabbed 11 rebounds and had a team-high six assists.
Samford struggled early only shooting 23 percent in the first half as Nicholls State (0-2) jumped out to a 26-14 lead with five minutes remaining in the opening period. The Bulldogs went on a 12-2 run in the closing 4:25 to bring the halftime score to 28-26.
The second half was all Samford. The Bulldogs went ahead for good 32-30 on a jumper by Wilcox with 17:33 to play and pushed the lead to nine points with 11:11 to play. The Bulldogs held Nicholls State to just 27 percent from the floor in the second half and just 31 percent for the game.
"Our defensive intensity really picked up after halftime," said Samford head coach Janet Cone. "The defense picked up and that picked up our offense. Wendy (Wilcox) played a good game from start to finish. She plays with intensity all of the time. Clarissa (Clark) is playing with more confidence and that is what we need. It is good to see four players in double-figures."
Tremaine Robinson, Mandy Broussard, and Heidi Broussard each had nine points for the Lady Colonels while Tiffany Nearing grabbed 10 rebounds. Nicholls State turned the ball over 27 times in the game and committed 26 fouls to just nine for Samford. The disparity in fouls led to Samford shooting 33 free throws and Nicholls State going to the line just six times.
The Bulldogs will go on the road for the first time this season when they travel to Hattiesburg, Miss. to face Southern Mississippi on Saturday at 6 p.m.
