BIRMINGHAM, Ala.--Kadell Wright scored two touchdowns to lead Samford University to a 21-14 overtime win over Charleston Southern University in NCAA Division I-AA football Saturday.
Wright, a senior fullback, barreled in from a yard out in the first overtime to give Samford (4-6) its margin of victory in the Bulldog Homecoming game. Chip Walters kicked the extra point, his third of the game.
Samford defensive back Robert Evans sealed the win, intercepting Charleston Southern quarterback Travis Cunningham's fourth down pass in the end zone on the Buccaneer overtime possession.
Cunningham's 19-yard touchdown pass to A.J. Jones and Jason Russell's extra point gave Charleston Southern (4-5) a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter. Samford tied the score, 7-7, as Wright capped an 80-yard second period drive with a one-yard run.
Jones scored again on a three-yard run for Charleston Southern midway through the third quarter, and Russell's extra point gave the Buccaneers a 14-7 lead.
But Samford came right back to tie the score, 14-14, on a three-play, 80-yard drive capped by Rashad Brewer's one-yard run. Josh Kellett's 69-yard pass play to Aryvia Holmes to the Buccaneer one highlighted the drive.
Charleston Southern won the toss in overtime and gave Samford the ball first. The Bulldogs scored in six running plays. Wright ran 10 yards to get a first down at the eight-yard line and Holmes set up Wright's winning dive with a seven-yard run to the one.
Wright led Samford with 80 yards in 19 carries. Holmes caught four passes for 108 yards and ran six times for 38 yards.
Cunningham ran 93 yards in 21 carries and completed 13 of 24 passes for 159 yards for Charleston Southern.
The Buccaneers totaled 21 first downs and 330 yards on offense, converting 13 of 22 third down attempts. Samford had 14 first downs and 276 yards of offense.
