BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Derrick Jones scored 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season as Samford defeated Gardner-Webb 77-62 at Seibert Hall Saturday afternoon.
Corey Green scored 17, Chris Weaver added 10 and Marc Salyers just missed a double-double with nine points but led Samford (3-4, 1-1 TAAC) with 12 rebounds in a game postponed approximately 40 minutes by a tornado warning. The delay affected both teams' shooting touches early, and after an early 4-0 lead Gardner-Webb (4-7) would never see the lead again. Salyers hit a three at the 16:05 mark to cut the GWU lead to 4-3 and scored nine first half points to lead the Bulldogs, and Samford led by as many as 10 before taking a 7-point lead into halftime. Kerek Taylor and Bert Epting led GWU with 11 point each.
The second half belonged to Samford, as the Bulldogs went on a 22-7 run in the span of eight minutes to extend their lead to 20, 51-31. Green and Weaver did their damage in the second half as well, scoring 16 and 12 respectively. Samford shot 46 percent from the three-point arc and 54 percent from the field, while GWU shot a respectable 40 percent from beyond the arc and 45 percent from the field, but the biggest difference in the game was Samford's 49-29 uncharacteristic edge in rebounding. Salyers led the Bulldogs in the first half with nine points, but got into foul trouble and played only seven minutes of the second half. Jones also scored 14 of his 22 points in the second period, hitting a trio of three pointers.
Tyson Dorsey also added six, Cornell Felton scored five, Phillip Ramelli added four and Eddie Harper scored two to round out the scoring for the Bulldogs.
Samford heads west to play in the Trend Homes Classic, hosted by Fresno State, on Dec 19-20. The Bulldogs' first game is Dec. 19 at 7:30 p.m. against Louisiana-Lafayette, while the second game with either Toledo or Fresno State is TBA. Both games can be heard on WAPI-AM 1070 and on www.samfordsports.com.
