GREEN BAY, Wisc. - Chris Weaver scored 20 points to lead five Samford players in double figures as the Bulldogs defeated Northern Iowa 75-68 in the consolation game of the Oneida Bingo and Casino Classic on Saturday.
Weaver scored 20 points to lead Samford for the second time this season, shooting 7-of-10 from the field and 4-of-7 from the three-point line. He led a Bulldog team that erased a six-point deficit, 45-51, with an 18-4 run sparked by a three-pointer by Sebastian Sachse at the 12:52 mark of the second period. Samford regained the lead with a Derrick Jones three-pointer at 53-51 with 11:21 remaining, and Cornell Felton added a three to give Samford the lead for good at 57-55 with 7:42 left in the game. Aaron Middendorf led Northern Iowa with 20 points, Joe Breakenridge added 19 points and 10 rebounds and Andre Clark scored 17 for the Panthers.
Samford led by two, 34-32 at halftime and increased it to as many as nine in the second half while shooting 60 percent from the field and 45 percent from the three-point line. Four other Bulldogs joined Weaver in double digits as Marc Salyers added 19 points and five rebounds in 40 minutes, Cornell Felton scored a career-high 11 points and Derrick Jones and Corey Green each added 10 points as the Bulldogs posted a win on head coach Jimmy Tillette's 100th game.
"I'm a big Chris Weaver fan," said Tillette about Weaver's re-emergence in the Bulldog offense. "He is a fine shooter, and I was encouraged to see tonight that even when Chris missed a shot, his body language was very positive. It wasn't a 'woe is me' look but a determined look to shoot again and to score."
The second half was the key for Samford, as the Bulldogs rebounded from Friday's poor shooting performance to fire 7-of-11 from the arc in the second period. Samford's shooting enabled them to run their Princeton-style offense, scoring on layups and three-pointers as Weaver scored 14 of his 20 points, Jones scored his 10 points and Corey Green added six of his 10 in the last half.
"I was disappointed with our shooting in the first game, because we did get some good looks against Wisconsin-Green Bay," Tillette added. "When you aren't shooting well and knocking down shots, you don't get the back door cuts because they don't have to guard you so closely on the perimeter.
"Cornell is getting better, Sebastian is getting better, and Corey Green played his slashing style of game tonight. We still need to cut down on the turnovers, and Marc will get better with that as he learns to deal with the double-teams as the season goes on. He is a fine passer and he will help us in that area as the season progresses."
Sachse's three-pointer accounted for his only points and Gabe Skypala added a basket to round out the scoring for the Bulldogs.
Samford returns to action on Jan. 3 as they host TAAC opponent Jacksonville at 6:00 p.m. at Seibert Hall.
