Bulldogs Get Work In On Sunday

Aug. 13, 2000

Samford football moved to shoulder pads and helmets on Sunday, working primarily on the passing game and kickoff coverage in preparation for Tuesday's full contact practices.

Head Coach Pete Hurt praised the improvement and retention since spring drills of his returning freshmen, many of whom redshirted in 1999. Among those redshirts, Hurt was particularly pleased with the progression of backup quarterback Thomas Brown and defensive back Will Lawler.

"One thing that has stood out to me has been the noted improvement of the freshmen who were here last year," Hurt said. "I'm pleased with their progression from even the spring drills to now, especially Thomas Brown at quarterback and Will Lawler in the defensive backfield.Last season gave both of them time to understand what we try to do on offense and defense, and now it's obvious that they are ready to contribute."

The Bulldogs will go in helmets and shoulder pads agin on Monday in preparation for their first day in full pads on Tuesday.
