Samford Opens TAAC With Win at Mercer

MACON, Ga. - Samford University made first half goals by Lindsay Anglin and Hayley Kolb stand up as the Bulldogs won their fourth-straight match, 2-1, over Mercer University in Trans America Athletic Conference women's soccer action Saturday afternoon.

Samford (4-2, 1-0 TAAC) scored its first goal in the 20th minute off a corner kick. Rebecca Kent took the corner, which was headed by Jackie Foster towards the goal. Anglin and Mercer goal keeper Genevieve Reed jumped to the ball, but Anglin's head got there first and the ball went into the net for her second goal of the season.

In the 23 minute, the Mercer defense misplayed a ball at the 18-yard box which led to a turnover and an empty net which Kolb easily found with a right-footed shot for her third goal of the year. Samford took the 2-0 lead into halftime.

Mercer (3-3, 1-1 TAAC) came out strong in the second half and immediately created two scoring chances. Maria Westberg had a one-on-one with Samford goal keeper Carrie Ollom, but Ollom deflected the shot and defender Melissa Hart cleared the deflection before it could reach the goal line. Anna Bengtsson also a an opportunity which she sent high over the crossbar.

Mercer's pressure would pay off in the 79th minute when Anne-Marie Lapalme received a pass from Bengtsson which she just got past a diving Ollom. Both players collided, Lapalme had the wind knocked out of her and was forced to leave the match momentarily while Ollom received a yellow card for the hard challenge.

The Bears out-shot the Bulldogs 17-14 but Ollom came up with seven key saves and Samford was able to hold on for its fourth-straight victory and third-straight over Mercer.

The Bulldogs will continue TAAC play on Thursday night when they travel to Troy State for a 3:30 p.m. game.
