Bulldogs Command Colonels 28-10

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Kadell Wright scored two touchdowns and Josh Kellett scored one and passed for another to lead Samford University to a 28-10 win over Nicholls State in NCAA Division I-AA football Saturday night.

Samford (3-2) scored two touchdowns during a span of 2:12 to take a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter. The Bulldogs drove 57 yards in nine plays capped by Wright's one-yard dive with five seconds left in the first period. Chip Walters kicked his first of four extra points and Samford led, 7-0.

Samford's Blake Hall recovered a Nicholls State fumble at the Colonel 24 on the first play after the ensuing kickoff. Kellett hit tight end Ryan Buchanan on an eight-yard touchdown pass four plays later, and Samford led, 14-0, with 12:53 remaining in the second quarter.

Kyle Leisher kicked a 31-yard field goal for Nicholls State (1-4) as time expired in the first half, and Samford led, 14-3.

Samford, which controlled the ball for 36 minutes of the game, consumed the first 8:27 of the second half, driving 72 yards to an 11-yard touchdown run by Kellett. Samford led, 21-3.

Brad Smith capped a 61-yard drive for Nicholls with a five-yard run, cutting Samford's lead to 21-10 with 1:28 left in the third quarter.

Samford came back to drive 55 yards to Wright's second touchdown, another one-yard dive, with 7:07 remaining.

Samford rolled up 24 first down and 288 rushing yards, and Kellett hit seven of nine passes for another 77 yards for the Bulldogs. Nicholls totaled 13 first downs and 173 yards of offense.

Samford will have a short week this week as it heads to Denton, Texas to face DI-A foe North Texas on Thursday Oct. 5. Kickoff is at 7:00 p.m.
