Samford University's women's basketball had its poorest outing in the program's four year history at Georgia State on Thursday night. The Bulldogs set school records for fewest points in a half and fewest points in a game as Georgia State handed Samford its third worst loss in school history.
The Lady Panthers opened the game with a 20-3 run over the first 10 minutes and never
looked back as they cruised to a 82-30 TAAC win. Georgia State (10-5, 4-2) set a school record for fewest points allowed in a game as the visiting Bulldogs (4-12, 3-4) managed just 30 points on 10-48 shooting from the floor.
Georgia State was led by senior Leslie McElrath who finished with 21 points, eight boards, and a career high four blocks. In her first career start, sophomore Angelina Miller scored 16 points
with three steals on five of seven shooting from the floor. Ten different players scored for Georgia State as the bench scored 26 points.
The Lady Panthers built a 36-11 halftime lead and opened the second half with an 18-point run to take a 54-11 advantage with 14:45 remaining in the game. The State defense held Samford to just 20.8 percent shooting from the floor while forcing 24 turnovers and dominating the boards
by a 55-17 margin that included 22 offensive rebounds.
Samford was led by Aimee Cochran with seven points and Wendi Wilcox with six points as the Bulldogs dropped to 1-6 on the road this season. It was Samford's worse defeat since Feb.12, 1998 when the Bulldogs lost to Florida International 101-33.
The Bulldogs will try to regroup as they face conference leading Campbell in Buies Creek, N.C. at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The game will be televised by College Sports Southeast.
