Campbell Defeats Samford, 86-53, in TAAC Women's Basketball

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - April Cromartie scored 18 points and set a new individual game record while leading the Campbell University women's basketball team to a 86-53 Trans America Athletic Conference win over Samford University on Saturday.

Cromartie connected on 8-of-8 from the field to set the new mark for field goal percentage in a game as the Lady Camels, who have won 14 consecutive games against TAAC opponents, remained undefeated in league play (7-0) and improved to 11-4 overall this season. The loss puts the Bulldogs at 4-13, 3-5.

Aimee Cochran led the Bulldogs with 16 points and three assists. Sarah Clement and Suzette Pittman each had eight points.

Also for Campbell, Crystal Clary recorded the fifth double-double of her career with 11 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. She also dished four assists. Janice Washington followed with 12 points and four assists as well, while Carrie Emory added eight points and two blocks.

The Lady Camels shot a season-high 54.5 percent on 30-of-55 from the field while holding Samford to just 37.9 percent shooting (22-58). CU also held the edge on the glass, out-rebounding their opponent 45-24. Campbell committed 21 turnovers while Samford had 24.

The Lady Camels took the early lead and never trailed in the game. With the score at 10-6 in their favor at 13:20 in the first half, Cromartie scored six points that sparked a 12-2 run over the next 3:24 to push the score to 22-8. The Lady Camels carried a 37-20 advantage into the locker room.

Campbell came out hot in the second half and shot 57.7 percent (15-26). The Lady Camels held as much as a 39-point lead twice in the period, the last time at 85-46 on a lay-up by Cromartie with just over three minutes to play.

The Bulldogs will have a week off before traveling to Jacksonville State on Saturday, Jan. 27, for a 4:30 p.m. game. The game will be the 100th game for Samford women's basketball.
