ORLANDO, Fla. - Mark Salyers had 23 points, all in the second half, and
Samford finished the game on a 13-2 run to defeat Central Florida 76-62 in a
TransAmerica Athletic Conference game Monday.
Salyers, who was 0-for-3 at halftime, made 7-of-8 shots in the second half,
including three 3-point attempts. He scored 17 points in the final 6:25 of the game, and shot a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line down the stretch.
"I couldn't get comfortable with my shot in the first half," said Salyers. "I couldn't get my feet right and I felt like I was just throwing it up there. But once I got over the nerves in the second half and made my first shot, I felt good after that."
Samford also got 14 points from Derrick Jones
and nine points each from Chris Weaver, Corey Green and Tyson Dorsey. Green and Dorsey joined Gabe Skypala to give Samford 24 points off the bench, as Skypala recorded career-highs in rebounds (10) and minutes of play (30).
"We did not begin the first half with a mindset to defend and to play well," said Samford Head Coach Jimmy Tillette. "We got great play from our bench tonight, because they came in and got us right, especially the play of Gabe Skypala, Corey Green and Tyson Dorsey."
The teams were tied 31-31 at the half, and Samford (7-7, 4-1) led 63-54 when UCF (5-9, 1-3) went on a 6-0 run with 3:36
remaining. But the Golden Knights managed only two points the rest of the way
as Salyers scored 11 of his team's final 13 points.
Samford finished 14-of-34 (.412) from the three-point line, tying a season high for made treys in a game. The Bulldogs also shot 50 percent from the field in the second half and 48 percent for the game, while holding UCF to 37 percent shooting and forcing 10 turnovers. UCF, which shot 29.4 percent in the second half, was led by Mario Lovett
with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Paul Reed had 12 points on 4-of-16 shooting and
eight rebounds. Beronti Simms came off the bench to score 14 points and reserve
Kevin Lee had 11.
The Bulldogs will remain at the top of the TAAC as they head home for three consecutive conference games, beginning with Mercer at 7:00 p.m. on Jan. 11.
