Bulldogs Rally to Tie Alabama A&M

NORMAL, Ala. - - Samford rallied back to score two goals in the last two minutes of regulation then battled Alabama A&M in two overtimes as the Bulldogs tied A&M, 3-3 Friday afternoon. Samford moved to 7-9-2 overall while A&M improved to 2-9-1.

The Bulldogs trailed A&M 3-1 in the 74th minute. Summer Hammond scored on a penalty kick from inside the box after Samford's Sarah Litteken was called for knocking down A&M's Florence Ranyawa in the box.

Fourteen minutes later, freshman forward Lindsay Shanks scored her ninth goal of the season to cut Alabama A&M's deficit to 3-2 in the 88th minute. Shanks took a through-ball from Lisa Robishaw who took a pass from Hayley Kolb and kicked into the net from 16 yards out.

With 10 seconds remaining in regulation, the Bulldogs were awarded a corner kick. Heather Pomper's corner found the head of Keala Ryan in traffic to knot the game at 3 and force overtime.

Samford scored the first goal of the game in the 14th minute. Christina Dortch took a feed from Robishaw. Dortch's shot found the right corner of the net putting the Bulldogs ahead 1-0. Alabama A&M was awarded a goal on an own goal by the Bulldogs tying the game, 1-1 in the 15th minute. A&M scored the next two goals. Abria Queen scored in the 33rd minute and Hammond scored in the 74th minute.

In both overtimes, Samford had five scoring threats. Dortch, Shanks and Woods all had shots on goal but none of them dropped in.

Samford came back to out shoot A&M 19-16 for the game. The Bulldogs also held the advantage in corner kicks, 8-1. Cassie Coggins recorded five saves while Crystal Royal had one save for Samford. Shanks tied Kolb's single-season record for goals (9) while Ryan scored her second career goal and Dortch picked up her first career goal.

The Bulldogs next game is Nov. 2 when they celebrate senior day against Tennessee Tech. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
