Whitney Miller recorded 20 kills to lead the Samford Bulldogs over Jacksonville State 30-25, 15-30, 30-23, 30-22 in Atlantic Sun volleyball action Tuesday night.
Miller led three Bulldogs in double figures with a .324 hitting percentage. Shellie Ouldhouse added 13 kills and Stefanie Pickett had 12 kills for Samford as it improved to 7-9 on the season and 3-1 in A-Sun play. Jacksonville State dropped to 4-10 and 0-3 in the conference.
Miller recorded 11 of her 20 kills in the opening game as she keyed a 7-2 Samford run to close out the first game. In the second game, JSU took advantage of a predictable Samford offense. Christina Cary recorded four off her team-high 15 kills as the Lady Gamecocks tied the match 30-15.
Ouldhouse and Pickett combined for 10 kills in game three as the Bulldogs jumped out to a 13-7 lead. JSU battled back taking nine of the next 14 points to bring the score to 20-18, but Samford closed out the game on a 10-5 run to win 30-23.
The Bulldogs looked to run away and hide with the final game jumping out to an early 16-6 lead. JSU would not go down easy on its home floor. The Lady Gamecocks fought back and got as close as 25-21 but the Bulldogs wrapped up the match with a 5-1 run finished off by a kill from Pickett. Samford out blocked JSU 13-7 and out hit the Lady Gamecocks .238- .224 in the match.
"Its always good to win on the road," said head coach Vickie Nichols. "We didn't play as consistently as we could have, but I am proud of the way our middles have played tonight and in the last couple of matches."
The Bulldogs who have won five of their last six will return home for a pair of key conference matches this weekend. Samford plays UCF at 7 p.m. on Friday and Florida Atlantic at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Seibert Hall.
