Samford Drops Consolation to BSC

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Giovanni Price recorded a career-high with 16 rebounds and added 16 points for her second double-double of the season but it wasn't enough as Samford dropped the consolation game of the Lady Blazer Classic 53-48 to Birmingham-Southern at Bartow Arena Saturday afternoon.

Samford dropped it sixth-straight game to fall to 1-7 on the season despite out-shooting Birmingham Southern and grabbing three more rebounds than the Lady Panthers. Free throw shooting and turnovers cost the Bulldogs victory. Samford went 9-20 (45 percent) from the free throw line and committed 20 turnovers against Birmingham-Southern's full court press.

Lindsay Boyett led the Lady Panthers (6-5) with 12 points and Amy Woods and Nikki Elliott each had nine points. BSC played strong defense causing 20 Bulldog turnovers.

Clarissa Clark recorded her second-straight 17-point game for the Bulldogs to lead all scorers and LaBrena Friend went 2-4 from three-point range for seven points. Clark was 3-4 from the three-point arc.

Birmingham Southern led the entire first half and took a 29-21 lead into the locker room. The Lady Panthers opened the second half with a 6-2 run to build their largest lead at 35-23. Samford responded with a 19-2 run over the next eight minutes to take a 42-37 lead with 9:59 left to play. Then the Bulldogs went cold. Over the next eight and a half minutes the Bulldogs would not score as Birmingham-Southern went on a 12-0 run to take a 49-42 lead with 3:01 to play. The Bulldogs next basket came with 1:27 remaining in the game which made the score 49-44. Clark hit a three-pointer with 54 seconds remaining to bring Samford to within three points at 50-47, but Atia Agee found Boyett open under the basket with 11 seconds left to seal the victory for the Lady Panthers.

Samford will take a week off for Christmas before returning to Seibert Hall at 2 p.m. on Dec. 29, to face Alabama State. The game will be the Bulldogs first home game since Nov. 27.
