Samford sophomore Michelle Wright hit a double into the right centerfield gap which plated Mindy Shunnarah and Michelle Dickey in the 10th inning as the Bulldogs grabbed a 2-1 win over Georgia Southern in the first game of the GSU/Reebox Invitational on Friday afternoon.
In a game that was dominated by pitching, all of the fireworks happened in the final inning. Georgia Southern, (2-9) which was the visiting team on its home field in the tournament format, scored the games first run in the top of the tenth. Under the international tiebreaker rules GSU's Janice Savage was placed at second base to start the inning. She advance to third on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI-single by Shannon Hoobin.
In the bottom of the inning, Samford (3-10) placed Dickey at second base were she remained with two outs. Shunnarah drew a walk and both runners moved up on a wild pitch. Wright followed with her only hit of the day to clear the bases and give the Bulldogs the victory.
Brianne Mertens (2-6) picked up the win by pitching a complete game giving up just four hits and one unearned run. She walked two and struck out six. Savage (1-4) took the loss for Georgia Southern. She pitched 9.2 innings giving up two runs on seven hits.
Michelle Ashley and Abi Casillo each went 2-3 in the game for the Bulldogs. Samford now turns around to play Coastal Carolina at 6 p.m. tonight.
