Samford University celebrated its first four-year senior class of women's basketball players on Saturday and then the seven seniors went out and scored 62 of the Bulldogs season-high 88 points as Samford defeated Troy State 88-61 in Trans America Athletic Conference play at Seibert Hall.
Aimee Cochran scored 17 points, Kelli Moore scored a career-high 12 points to grabbed a career-high seven rebounds, Wendi Wilcox added 11 points, Jennifer Lutrell and Cortney Moore each scored nine points, and Danielle Pinkston added four points all in their final home performance. Samford (7-18, 6-10 TAAC) shot 50 percent from the floor for the first time this season, 42 percent (8-19) from three-point range, and shot 80 percent (12-15) from the free throw line.
"An inspired group of people can do amazing things," said Samford head coach Janet Cone. "Once again our defense was great, but we finally got offensive production from a number of players. We shot well from the floor, from the arc, and from the line. We had four players in double-figures and two more with nine points. That is the balance we have been looking for."
Troy State (13-12, 8-8 TAAC) scored the first four points of the game before freshman Giovanni Price scored nine points in six minutes to help Samford on a 13-2 run and the Bulldogs never looked back. Price finished with 17 points, 15 in the first half before an ankle injury limited her minutes. Samford would build as much as a nine point lead in the first half before taking a 37-29 lead into the locker room.
The second half was all Bulldogs. Samford shot 56 percent in the second half and scored a season-high 51 second half points. The Bulldogs used a 20-9 run to start the second period to build a 62-42 lead with 11:14 to play. Samford scored 42 points in the paint to 26 for Troy State and out rebounded the Lady Trojans 47-37.
Troy State's Jennifer McInnis was the only Lady Trojan in double figures as Troy State's starting five was held to 24 points.
Samford will finish the regular season in Florida next week. The Bulldogs will travel to UCF on Thursday before facing Florida Atlantic next Saturday.
