BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - A one-out grand slam by Heath Owen in the bottom of the first inning was the game-winner for Samford, as the Bulldogs added one additional run in the eighth to knock off Alabama A&M 6-3 at Joe Lee Griffin Field on Wednesday.
Samford (2-8) loaded the bases and led 1-0 without a hit in their first at-bat, as Alabama A&M (6-4) pitcher Douglas Henry struggled with his control early. Following a lead-off out by Cory Sumner, Henry hit Robert Evans with a pitch, walked Grant Caldwell, hit Major Allred with a pitch, and walked Philip Holmes to score Evans from third. With the bases loaded, Owen's home run flew approximately 355 feet over the center field wall, and Samford led 5-0.
Senior Dennis Thomas started on the mound for the Bulldogs, pitching three innings with two hits and four strikeouts. Charlie Crabbe entered the game in the fourth for Samford, allowing one run on two A&M hits in the fifth inning. After Patrick Neely led off the inning for A&M, a sacrifice bunt by Brian Rice moved Neely to second, and a double by shortstop Michael May scored Neely to cut the lead to 5-1. Crabbe also recorded three strikeouts before Joe Denson relieved him in the sixth.
Denson held A&M scoreless in his one inning of action, striking out two of three batters he faced in the sixth. Jared Smith took the mound for the first time this season in the seventh, allowing a run on three hits while striking out two. A&M run in the seventh came as May singled, stole second and scored on a single by Charles Rainey.
The visiting Bulldogs added their last run in the top of the ninth facing Shane Weeks, as Neely homered for the first time this season to left center with one out. Terrance Thomas then reached first on an error, and Brian Rice singled. After advancing to second, Thomas was put out at third by Richard Bishop and Weeks got a fly out to end the game.
Samford returns to action on Thursday, March 1, facing Mississippi State in Starkville, Miss., at 3 p.m. The Bulldogs then return home to host Vanderbilt at 6 p.m. on March 7.
