THIBODAUX, La. - Nicholls State scored six runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to win the nightcap of Saturday's double header and to sweep its three-game series with Samford at Didier Field.
Samford (4-11) led 3-2 with two out in the bottom of the eighth inning when Nicholls State (13-12) mounted its charge. After a lead-off walk by Luke Muller, Samford's Shane Weeks got a pop out and a fielder's choice out of Muller, putting a runner at first with two gone. But then back-to-back singles, an error by Ricky Honeycutt and another single gave the Colonels the go-ahead run. NSU would score three additional runs and junior reliever Seth Schornick retired the Bulldogs in the ninth in order.
Samford led 1-0 in the second inning as Philip Holmes reached first after being hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a Honeycutt single, and scored on a single by Cory Sumner. NSU tied the game in the third, but Samford added two runs in the fifth. Cory Sumner started the fifth with a lead-off walk, followed by a Robert Evans single and Grant Caldwell reaching on a fielder's choice that put Sumner out a third. A Heath Owen walk loaded the bases for the Bulldogs, and two batters later Philip Holmes singled to score Evans and Caldwell.
NSU outhit the Bulldogs 9-7, committed no errors and left three on base, while the Bulldogs committed three errors and stranded 12.
Samford returns to action at home against Birmingham-Southern at 6 p.m. at Joe Lee Griffin Field. The Bulldogs will play a return game at Birmingham-Southern at 7 p.m. on March 14.
