LAFAYETTE, La. -
Samford University's softball team has not enjoyed its first two days in
Louisiana. The Bulldogs fell 15-0 to Louisiana Lafayette and 4-2 to Nicholls State on Sunday.
Samford finished third at the Janette Spell Memorial Tournament by going 0-4 on the weekend.
Sunday got off to a bad start for the Bulldogs as Lafayette (22-5) scored six runs in the top of the
first inning and never looked back as it ran up 15 runs in the five inning game. The 15 runs were
the most Samford has given up this season.
The Bulldogs (12-25) got on the board first against Nicholls State (18-20) in the final game of the
tournament. Abi Casillo had a two RBI-single up the middle which scored Michelle Ashley and
Mindy Shunnarah to give Samford a 2-0 advantage.
Samford starter Jennifer Morris had a two-hitter going through five innings but got into trouble in
the sixth inning. Nicholls State scored four runs on five hits and two Samford errors in the sixth to
take the 4-2 win.
Freshman Sarah Godfrey picked up the first two hits of her career as she went 2-2 against
Nicholls State in game two. Casillo, Jennifer Graham, and Janet Middleton all had four hits over
the weekend and two doubles. Those three players accounted for 12 of the Bulldogs 26 hits on
the weekend and Casillo accounted for four of the team's five RBI.
The Bulldogs will travel to Louisiana Tech on Monday for a 4 p.m. double header in Ruston, La.
Samford will then finish the trip in Shreveport, for a Tuesday double header against Centennary.
