NORMAL, Ala. - Robert Evans went 2-for-4 and scored twice and Sae Evans also went 2-for-4 with three RBI as Samford knocked off Alabama A&M, 9-3, in nonconference baseball action on Tuesday.
Samford (7-18, 1-5) all but emptied its bullpen against A&M, as seven pitchers threw one inning and sophomore Robert Evans pitched two, striking out the side in the ninth to end the game. Freshman Joe Denson (1-0) got the win, striking out three and allowing one run on two hits. The game was tied through five until Samford scored two in the sixth on RBIs from Heath Owen, then added five over the next three innings to blow the game open. Samford outhit A&M 9-7, scoring seven earned runs and stranding 10 base runners. A&M committed five errors that led to two unearned runs while Samford committed two, and also left 10 runners on base.
"It was a productive day of work," said Samford Head Coach Tim Parenton. "Whenever you can find a way to pitch a lot of guys and come away with a win, it's a successful day. Now we have to be ready to get back into conference play this weekend."
Samford opened the scoring in the top of the first as Robert Evans singled, stole second base, then advanced to third on a ground out by Grant Caldwell. Jason Livermore's single brought Evans home for his first run, and Samford led 1-0.
Michael May doubled off Major Allred in the bottom of the third to get things going for A&M, then tied the game on a single by Neely and a Samford error. Samford plated a run in the fifth, as Michael Collins led off with a double and advanced to third on a sacrifice fly by Joe Denson. Sae Evans' ground out to third to score Collins, and Samford was back on top 2-1. A&M knotched the game 2-2 with a run on two hits in freshman Travis Crossland's first appearance this season, then added their last run in the seventh to cut Samford's lead, 6-3.
Samford scored seven of its nine runs from the sixth inning on, including the go-ahead runs in the sixth that came on two A&M errors. Samford added two in the seventh and ninth innings and one in the seventh on a total of six hits and four A&M errors.
Seven different Bulldogs scored and six had runs batted in for Samford, led by Sae Evans' three RBI. Collins and Robert Evans each scored twice for Samford, and no pitcher allowed more than two hits while the staff struck out a combined 12 A&M batters.
Samford returns to action this weekend in a three game series with Trans America Athletic Conference foe Florida Atlantic in Boca Raton, Fla.
