AUBURN, Ala. - Auburn's Javon Moran walked and a Samford error made him the game winning base runner in the eighth inning as Auburn scored twice and held on to knock off Samford, 6-5, in nonconference baseball action at Hitchcock Field at Plainsman Park Tuesday.
Auburn (23-11, 5-10 SEC) scored two runs in the sixth to tie the game at 4-4 heading into the eighth, and held off a bases-loaded threat by Samford (8-24, 2-10 TAAC) in the top of the ninth to hand Samford its first loss against a Southeastern Conference foe in four tries.
The Tigers outhit the Bulldogs 12-4, but Samford took advantage of three Auburn errors to stay in the game. Major Allred hit his fourth home run of the season to put Samford on the scoreboard. Allred also pitched five innings, allowed two runs on eight hits, walked two and struck out one. Allred also led the Bulldogs at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a home run, two RBI and he scored twice. Derek Tharpe (1-7) took the loss for Samford, throwing three innings and allowing four runs on four hits. Jonathan Scheurholtz went 2-for-2 from the plate to lead the Tigers.
Samford returns to Birmingham to play at Birmingham-Southern on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
