BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Graham Burgess went 2-for 4 with a double and Birmingham-Southern scored four runs on four hits to defeat Samford 4-1 at Scrushy-Striplin Field on Wednesday.
Samford (8-25) outhit Birmingham-Southern (30-7) 6-5 in a game in which Burgess was the only player with multiple hits. Both teams started freshmen on the mound, as BSC starting pitcher Derek Griffith pitched four scoreless innings and struck out five, while Matt Fields allowed four runs on five hits in his first start for Samford. BSC spread four hits over two innings to tally four earned runs, while Samford managed only one in the seventh and stranded eight base runners in the game.
The Bulldogs first threatened in the third, as Cory Sumner walked and advanced to second on a Joe Denson single. Two batters later, Major Allred reached on a fielder's choice that moved Sumner to third with two outs, but Jason Livermore was unable to advance Allred who was put out at second to end the Samford threat in the third.
BSC's action began in the bottom of the third, as Fields hit Trent Asher and Ricky Gomez moved him to second with a sacrifice bunt. After a fly out by Adam Pease, David Driskill recorded the Panthers' first RBI, singling to score Asher. Another single by John Driskill moved David Driskill to third, and a double steal scored David for a 2-0 BSC lead and moved his cousin John to second. Fields got Jason Avery to ground out to end the inning.
Burgess led off the BSC fourth inning with a single, then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jon Prince. Fields then began to struggle with his control, hitting Connor Robertson and Trent Asher, and Gomez singled to score pinch runner Matt Bogue for a 3-0 BSC lead. Jared Smith relieved Fields for Samford, but tossed a wild pitch that allowed Robertson to score. At the end of the inning BSC had two hits and two more runs, and led 4-0.
A double by Robert Evans sparked the Samford offense in the sixth, but it was another two-bagger by Richard Bishop in the seventh that led to Samford's only run. A two-out single by Sae Evans scored Bishop, and Samford tallied only one additional hit in the next two innings for the 4-1 final.
The Bulldogs host TAAC foe Jacksonville this weekend, April 13-14, for a three-game series at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
