BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Jamie Rodgers went 3-for-5 and blasted a three-run home run in the second inning to propel Jacksonville past Samford 11-6 in Trans America Atheltic Conference baseball at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
Rodgers was a triple shy of hitting for the cycle against the Bulldogs, as Jacksonville (24-13, 11-5) pounded out 17 hits and took advantage of four Samford errors to win game one of a three-game TAAC series this weekend. The Dolphins touched Samford starter Charlie Crabbe (2-2) for eight earned runs on nine hits in four and a third innings, jumping out quickly 4-0 in the second inning and adding four more in the fifth. Samford answered with three runs in the third on four hits, and cut the JU lead to 8-6 with three in the fifth.
Robert Evans relieved Crabbe in the fifth, allowing JU's final three runs in the eighth. Josh Daws (2-2) pitched a complete game for JU, allowing six runs, four earned, and striking out seven with one walk.
Robert Evans went 2-for-3 and scored twice and Major Allred was 2-for 4 with four RBI to lead the Bulldogs offensively.
Samford and Jacksonville begin a double header at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
