JACKSONVILLE, Ala. - Samford pounded out a season-high 15 hits and Grant Caldwell went 3-for-4 as the Bulldogs topped Jacksonville State 7-1 in Trans America Athletic Conference action at Rudy Abbott Field Friday night.
Samford (12-27, 4-12) also got a third complete game from junior Major Allred (5-5), who scattered six hits over nine innings while fanning eight and walking one.
JSU (11-27, 3-13) drew first blood in the second inning, as Bobby Crompton reached and advanced to second on a two-out Bulldog error. Gamecock shortstop Carlos Delgado singled down the right field line to score Crompton, and JSU led 1-0.
Samford quickly responded in the third with two runs on two hits. After Sae Evans took first when hit by a pitch, Cory Sumner moved him to third with his first hit of the game. Sumner moved to second with his fourth stolen base of the season, giving Samford runners at second and third. Grant Caldwell singled to score Sae Evans and Sumner scored on a fielder's choice single by Robert Evans and Samford led, 2-1.
As Allred cruised to keep the Gamecocks in check, the Bulldogs continued to hit Shippey, adding a run in the fifth on three hits and plating a pair of insurance runs in each of the eighth and ninth innings.
Sumner's 2-for-5 outing extended his current hitting streak to seven, and Sae Evans also went 2-for3 with two runs scored. Robert Evans and Caldwell also added a pair of RBI for the Bulldogs. Delgado led the Gamecocks with a 2-for-3 evening and drove in JSU's only run.
The teams face each other again Saturday for a double header beginning at Noon at Rudy Abbott Field.
