JACKSONVILLE, Ala. - Samford recorded its first sweep of a Trans America Athletic Conference team since 1999 on Saturday, taking a double header 2-1 and 4-1 from Jacksonville State at Rudy Abbott Field.
The Bulldogs now control their own fate in regard to reaching the conference tournament, as the next three series are with teams who occupy spots with or above them in the TAAC standings.
"Getting three at this point in the season, regardless of who it's against, is big for us," said Samford Head Coach Tim Parenton. "You look around the country and no one is winning three, so this is great momentum for us. Our guys have been beaten up pretty good by some Top 30 teams this season, and we've won some games recently when we haven't played very well, and they know that."
In game one, Heath Owen doubled with two outs in the seventh inning to score Robert Evans and Ty Dedmon, giving Samford a 2-1 come-from-behind win. Samford's late inning heroics ruined JSU starter Jessie Corn's bid for a two-hit shutout and assured the Bulldogs of their first TAAC series win this season. Evans led off the seventh with a double, then moved into scoring position with a stolen base and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Dedmon reached on a hit-by-pitch. Owen's game-winner appeared routine until JSU left fielder Joel Stapleton lost it in the sun and ball dropped near the warning track, scoring Evans from third and Dedmon from first.
Two JSU singles and a double steal led to the only JSU run of the game in the fifth, Michael Helms scored Carlos Delgado with a two-out RBI off Bulldog reliever Shane Weeks.
Jacksonville State outhit Samford 7-4 but stranded six runners to three for the Bulldogs. Weeks (1-2) got the win for Samford, while Corn took his fourth loss of the season.
Samford's other two hits came on a Sae Evans double in the third and a single by Joe Denson in the fifth. Owen was the only starter who did not record a hit in Samford's 7-1 win on Friday night.
In game two, TAAC Player-of-the-Week candidate Sae Evans went 2-for-3 and scored a run as the bottom half of the Samford lineup accounted for three of the Bulldogs' four runs and five of the six hits. Joe Denson, Heath Owen and Michael Collins each went 1-for-3 and Owen tripled to lead off Samford's two-run fifth. Senior Ty Dedmon (1-6) pitched a complete game for Samford, scattering three hits and allowing only one run while striking out seven.
JSU's only run came on a solo home run by first baseman Rhett McCreight in the second inning to tie the game at 1-1.
Samford outhit JSU six to four and the Gamecocks committed two errors that led to one unearned run.
