Mercer Doubles Up Samford. 16-8

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - James McDonough went 4-for-6 and Mike Appalucci hit a grand slam as Mercer doubled up Samford 16-8 in Trans America Athletic Conference action Friday.

Samford (14-30, 6-13) took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning but saw it vanish as Mercer (22-24, 8-14) bats awakened and struck Bulldog pitching for 23 hits, including three home runs. The Bears' 16 runs and 23 hits are the most surrendered by Samford this season.

The Bears cut the Bulldog lead to 2-1 in the second, then added two in the third on a McDonough home run. But it was Appalucci who blew the game open in the fourth with a two-out grand slam that led to a six-run Mercer inning.

Samford responded with two homers of its own in the fourth from Major Allred and Heath Owen, but Samford pitching could not contain the Mercer onslaught. Kyle Levengood homered in the fifth that led to two more Mercer runs, and the Bears added two in the sixth and one in the eighth. Levengood tallied three RBI on the night.

Allred was 4-for-5, scored twice and drove in three runs to lead the Bulldogs offensively. Jason Page (8-6) picked up the win for Mercer, while the loss fell to Jared Smith (1-2). Ryan Newton, Levengood, and Chase Brantley were 3-for-6 and Drew Starke was 4-for-6 for Mercer.

Samford and Mercer continue the series on Saturday with a double header that begins at 1 p.m. at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
