BIRMINGHAM - Major Allred and Cory Sumner each went 4-for-7 and Ty Dedmon picked up two wins as Samford swept its double header with Mercer, 7-6 and 3-1, in Trans America Athletic Conference action at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
Dedmon took over for Allred in game one and controlled the Bears as the starter in game two, scattering five hits over nine and a third innings and allowing only one run with six strikeouts. But it was Allred who provided late-game heroics, blasting a solo home run to give Samford (15-30, 7-13) a 7-6 win and to even the series at 1-1. The Bulldogs led 3-1 in the third, then evened the game 6-6 as Sumner doubled to score Ricky Honeycutt and Joe Denson flied out to score Richard Bishop. The blast by Allred was his second of the series, and completed a three-run come-from-behind victory for the Bulldogs. Sumner was a perfect 4-for-4 in game one with 3 RBI, Allred went 2-for-4 and Ricky Honeycutt was 2-for-3 and scored twice. Dedmon allowed only two hits and no runs in two and a third innings to pick up his second win of the season.
Dedmon was the story in game two, hurling a one-hit game through five innings and scattering three hits and one run over seven for the game. Samford struck first, as Honeycutt scored on a Sae Evans double down the left field line, then a lead-off home run by Grant Caldwell in the fourth extended Samford's lead to 2-0. Mercer scored in the sixth, as David Harwell singled and eventually scored as Levengood hit into a double play. Samford added an insurance run in the sixth and claimed its second consecutive TAAC series. Allred and Caldwell each went 2-for-3 to lead the Bulldogs.
Samford hosts UAB in a make-up game on Wed., May 2 at Joe Lee Griffin Field, then travels to Atlanta for a crucial TAAC series with Georgia State, May 4-5.
