BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Cory Acklus hit a two-out double in the seventh inning to give UAB a lead the Blazers would never relinquish, as UAB knocked off Samford 4-2 in nonconference baseball action at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
Samford (16-31) drew first blood on a Heath Owen solo home run and led 1-0 through six innings. UAB (23-24) had success in the seventh, as Acklus doubled and also scored on a single by Mitch Jones to push UAB's advantage to 3-1. Sae Evans reached on a UAB error in the eighth and Cory Sumner drove him in to cut the UAB lead to 3-2, but a wild pitch by Bulldog hurler Dennis Thomas in the ninth scored Christian Reimers, padding the Blazer lead, 4-2. Philip Holmes walked and Josh Rhodes singled in the ninth, but Samford stranded them both in its last at-bat.
UAB edged Samford by one hit, 8-7, and no Bulldog hitter recorded a multiple-hit game. Mark Garner was 2-for-4 and Jones was 2-for-5 for the Blazers. Scott Gibson (3-2) got the win for UAB, while Charlie Crabbe (2-3) took the loss for Samford.
The teams play again at UAB at 7 p.m. on May 8, but first Samford continues its run to the Trans America Athletic Conference this weekend against Georgia State in Atlanta, May 4-5.
