ATLANTA, Ga. - Grant Caldwell went 3-for-4 and Samford pounded out a season-high 19 hits as the Bulldogs defeated Georgia State 13-6 in game one of a crucial Trans America Athletic Conference weekend series at Dekalb South Field.
Samford (17-31, 9-13) trailed 2-0 through three innings, but went on a tear through the middle innings on Georgia State (20-30, 8-14) ace Ryan Patrylo. The Bulldogs blew the game open with five runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth, taking a 9-3 lead after five. Samford added a pair of runs in the sixth and the seventh, and Derek Tharpe held the Panthers at bay in relief of Major Allred, allowing only one run on three hits with five strikeouts.
Mic Knox was 4-for-4 with a home run to lead the Panthers. Along with Caldwell, Sae Evans and Joe Denson went 3-for-5 and Cory Sumner drove in three runs for the Bulldogs. Allred (6-5) picked up the win for Samford, while Patrylo (4-4) took the loss for GSU.
The Bulldogs put the lead-off man on base through the first four innings and outhit the Panthers 19-11 for the game. Both teams committed two errors, with GSU's leading directly to two of Samford's runs in the fourth. Samford left nine runners on base to GSU's eight.
The two teams play a double header on Saturday beginning at 12:30 p.m. (CDT).
